The Role of Support Coordinators in Employment Planning

The Role of Support Coordinators in Employment Planning

Posted January 2025

For individuals living with disability, finding meaningful employment can be a life-changing opportunity, offering a sense of purpose, independence, and financial stability. If finding meaningful employment is a goal for you, then your support coordinator may be able to help you achieve it.

What is a Support Coordinator?

A Support Coordinator helps NDIS participants understand and implement their plans, connecting them with services, resources, and opportunities tailored to their needs and goals.

When it comes to employment and supported employment, these professionals are instrumental in bridging the gap between participants, service providers, and potential employers, ensuring that participants receive the right support to succeed in the workforce.

How Support Coordinators Assist with Employment Planning

Defining Employment Goals

Support Coordinators work closely with participants (who have funding for Support Coordination in their plans), to understand their unique interests, skills, and career aspirations.

They help set clear and realistic employment goals, whether that’s securing a job, developing skills, or exploring volunteering opportunities.

Connecting to Key Services

They link participants with relevant supports, including:

 • School Leaver Employment Support (SLES) for young participants transitioning into work.
 • Disability Employment Services (DES) for job readiness training and resume assistance.
 • Customised Employment Programs, which can provide one-on-one support for job discovery and creation.
 • Specialised Supported Employment services such as those provided at Willing & Able.

Addressing Barriers

For participants who face obstacles, such as accessibility issues or a lack of workplace accommodations, Support Coordinators can act as advocates.

They help to identify solutions, such as assistive technology, workplace modifications, or transport support, and can work with service providers to implement solutions.

Utilising NDIS Funding Effectively

Support Coordinators help to ensure that participants make the most of their NDIS funding. This includes:

 • Capacity-building programs to enhance skills.
 • Support for workplace adjustments.
 • Funding for personal care or transport during the workday.
 • Providing Ongoing Guidance and Support

Willing & Able’s Commitment to Supported Employment Success

Together, we’re building a more inclusive, diverse, and empowered community.
